Frozen II’ builds on India’s new love for animation

Disney’s recent animated feature, Frozen II, is on track to surpass the ₹40 crore mark in India, capitalizing on the nation’s newfound affection for animated films. This surge in popularity follows the success of The Lion King, which crossed ₹155 crore in July, currently ranking as the fourth-highest grossing Hollywood film in the country. Directed by Jon Favreau, The Lion King easily outperformed Disney’s previous animation offering, Incredibles 2, which had set the stage for animated films with collections of ₹36.90 crore last year.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh noted the success of Frozen II, stating that it continues to gain momentum and has become a favorite among kids and families, surpassing the lifetime business of the original Frozen.

Disney has invested significantly in localizing and marketing Frozen II for the Indian audience. The Hindi version is dubbed by actor sisters Priyanka and Parineeti Chopra, while the Tamil version features the voices of actor Shruti Haasan and popular television anchor Dhivyadarshini as the protagonists Elsa and Anna. In the Telugu version, popular actor Nithya Menen lends her voice to Elsa, and the voice of Baby Elsa is provided by Sitara Ghattamaneni, the seven-year-old daughter of superstar Mahesh Babu and Namrata Shirodkar.

The growing affection for animation in India extends beyond Hollywood films. Netflix is enthusiastic about the success of the Indian animated original Mighty Little Bheem, which claims to have had the largest launch for any preschool original and the second-largest launch for any kids’ original animated series on the platform.
